In a classic pitcher's duel that had fans on the edge of their seats, the Webb City Cardinals edged out the Joplin Eagles 1-0 in a thrilling rivalry matchup Thursday at JHS. It was the kind of game that reminds us why baseball is called a game of inches—and why every pitch matters.
Joplin's starter, Brecken Green, turned in a performance that would have earned a win on most nights. He surrendered just one hit all game—a crucial RBI double from Webb City's Braden Strickland—while striking out eight batters over 6⅓ innings. But that one hit proved to be the difference-maker. On the other side, Webb City's Mason Young was equally impressive, tossing a complete-game shutout with five strikeouts and just two walks, scattering five hits along the way.
The Eagles came out swinging early, putting runners in scoring position in the bottom of the first after a Hudson Ledford walk and a line-drive single to left by David Bhend. Joplin loaded the bases when Daniel Rose singled to right with one out, but the Cardinals' defense held firm, stranding all three runners. It was a pattern that would define the night for Joplin: plenty of opportunities, but no way to cash them in.
Joplin stranded another runner in the second after Jensen Stout drew a walk and advanced on a Jaxon Landis sacrifice, only to be left on base after a strikeout and groundout. The missed chances continued in the fourth when Stout reached on an infield single but was again left stranded.
The game's decisive moment came in the top of the fourth. With Landon Johnson on base, Strickland stepped up and crushed a double to center field, bringing Johnson home and giving Webb City a 1-0 lead they would never relinquish. That single swing of the bat was all the Cardinals needed on this night.
Joplin's defense showed its mettle in the top of the seventh, turning a slick 6-4-3 double play after Webb City's Karsen Myers reached on a liner to left. The Eagles entered the bottom of the seventh trailing by just one run, and hope flickered when Stout led off with a double to left. But a fielder's choice erased Stout, and despite a single from Layne Royle that advanced pinch-runner Hayden Wolf to second, the Cardinals' pitching held strong to seal the win.
Stout was a bright spot for Joplin, going 2-for-2 with a walk. Bhend contributed ⅔ innings of relief, allowing just one hit.
The Eagles (17-14) will look to bounce back Thursday when they travel to face Carl Junction (24-9) at 4:30 p.m., before wrapping up their regular season Friday at home against McDonald County (8-18) at the same time. Meanwhile, Webb City (25-4) will host Seneca (18-7-1) for their regular season finale Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
