The St. Louis Cardinals have been one of the biggest surprises in the National League this season. Sitting at 21-15 through 36 games, they're right in the thick of the NL Central race and currently hold the second Wild Card spot. While trade season is still months away, the Cardinals might find themselves in an unexpected position: buyers.
FanSided's Zachary Rotman recently floated an intriguing trade idea that would have St. Louis reaching out to the struggling Houston Astros about a reliever with championship pedigree. The target? Right-hander Bryan Abreu, a key piece of the Astros' 2022 World Series run.
Abreu has had a rough start to 2026, allowing 13 earned runs on 13 hits in just 12.1 innings pitched. That's a far cry from his stellar 2025 campaign, where he posted a 2.28 ERA across 70 appearances. But here's the thing—he's still striking batters out at an elite 30.8% clip. That kind of swing-and-miss stuff doesn't just disappear.
The Cardinals' bullpen has been their Achilles' heel, with a 4.92 ERA that ranks fourth-worst in baseball. While Riley O'Brien has emerged as a lockdown closer and JoJo Romero and Gordon Graceffo have been serviceable, there's a clear need for another reliable arm in high-leverage situations.
Rotman argues that Abreu wouldn't cost much to acquire, especially from an Astros team that looks like sellers at the deadline. "He offers a ton of upside," Rotman wrote. "If it doesn't work out, it's not like Abreu would be that much worse than a guy like Ryne Stanek, and again, he has so much upside. He could give the Cardinals a premier late-game duo as the setup man for O'Brien. It's worth a swing."
For a Cardinals team that's exceeding expectations, adding a proven arm with World Series experience and elite strikeout potential could be the move that solidifies their bullpen for a playoff push. Sometimes, the best trades are the ones that buy low on talent with a track record of success.
