St. Louis Cardinals fans have plenty to cheer about this season, and it's not just the team's surprising record. While rookie JJ Wetherholt is turning heads, it's Jordan Walker who is finally living up to his immense potential—and the organization appears ready to reward him.
According to MLB insider Robert Murray, Walker is emerging as a strong extension candidate. "While JJ Wetherholt has been mentioned as an extension candidate for the St. Louis Cardinals, the case for locking up Jordan Walker is also strong," Murray reports.
The timing makes sense. Walker, who turns 24 on May 22, is enjoying a breakout campaign. Through 41 games and 176 plate appearances, he's slashing .290 with 11 home runs, a .924 OPS, and a 164 OPS+. His 2.5 bWAR already exceeds his entire career total combined—a testament to how dramatically he's turned things around after struggling in previous seasons.
There is, of course, some risk. Could this be a mirage? Possibly. But the real danger for St. Louis lies in waiting too long. Walker is under club control through 2029, and locking him up now could secure a cornerstone player for years to come.
Murray points to two potential contract models: the six-year extension Pete Crow-Armstrong signed with the Chicago Cubs or the 10-year deal Austin Riley inked with the Atlanta Braves. For Cardinals fans, the latter would be the dream scenario—keeping Walker in St. Louis for the prime of his career.
Ideally, the front office acts quickly. When a 23-year-old slugger finally puts it all together, you don't hesitate. You get the deal done.
