Rio Ferdinand and Jamie Carragher may have been team-mates for England - but there is clearly no love lost between the former centre-backs based on a social media spat.

Old rivalries never really fade, do they? Especially when they involve two of the Premier League's most iconic defenders. Rio Ferdinand and Jamie Carragher may have shared an England dressing room, but their latest social media spat proves there's no shortage of bad blood between these former center-backs.

The drama kicked off ahead of the Manchester United vs. Liverpool clash when Ferdinand posted a throwback photo on Twitter with a simple challenge: "Caption this." The image captured a moment from September 2004—Ferdinand celebrating with United teammates after Mikaël Silvestre's winner, with a visibly dejected Carragher in the background. It was a particularly meaningful match for Ferdinand, marking his return from an eight-month ban for missing a drugs test.

Carragher didn't let the dig slide. He fired back, accusing Ferdinand of inserting himself into someone else's moment. "Not like you to make sure you were in the picture of someone else's goal," he wrote. "You now carry on this ritual by hanging around mixed zones bothering star players & asking your lackeys to film it!" The jab was aimed at Ferdinand's YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand Presents, where he often interviews fellow footballers.

Ferdinand didn't take the criticism quietly. On his podcast, he responded: "I thought it was really, really harsh. I just put a picture of us celebrating a goal. I've scored a couple of goals in these games against Liverpool, but I didn't put one I scored in." (For the record, Ferdinand did net twice against Liverpool, both in 2006 at Old Trafford.) "I put one I was celebrating," he continued. "I love celebrating, and he tried to really hammer me. I don't understand why. He spat his dummy out. He was spitting feathers."

The choice of words raised eyebrows, with many noting the unfortunate echo of Carragher's infamous 2018 spitting incident—where he was caught on camera spitting from his car toward a young girl after Liverpool's loss at Old Trafford. That incident led to Carragher's suspension from Sky Sports.

Ferdinand didn't stop there. He added a cheeky reminder of their England days: "He used to be a team-mate of mine with England. He used to carry my wash bag. He used to carry my boots." Whether it's playful banter or genuine tension, one thing's for sure—when these two lock horns, even a simple photo can spark fireworks.
