Canucks could match Sedin omen with Ivar Stenberg in NHL Draft

Vancouver has a lot of options.

The Vancouver Canucks may find a bit of déjà vu in the 2026 NHL Draft, and it could lead them straight to Swedish winger Ivar Stenberg. With the No. 3 overall pick, the Canucks have plenty of options, but Stenberg's story is one that any hockey fan—especially those who remember the Sedin twins—will want to follow.

Stenberg, a skilled forward from Sweden, is currently on the radar for the World Championships alongside fellow draft-eligible prospect Viggo Björck. Here's where the history gets interesting: the last time Sweden sent two draft-eligible skaters to its World Championship roster was back in 1999, when Daniel and Henrik Sedin made the cut. If that omen holds, Stenberg could be the kind of franchise-altering talent Vancouver dreams of.

But Stenberg isn't just a sentimental pick. The Athletic's Scott Wheeler recently ranked him in the coveted "Tier 1" of draft prospects, alongside Gavin McKenna. Stenberg's numbers back up the hype: he posted 33 points in 43 games in the SHL this season—an impressive output for a player his age. He also made history by becoming just the third player ever to score in the SHL postseason during his draft-minus-one season, joining elite company like Rasmus Dahlin and Victor Hedman. Oh, and he helped his team win a Champions Hockey League title this year, adding six points in 12 playoff games.

"His season's not done yet, either," Wheeler noted, "as he's auditioning for Sweden's men's worlds roster and had a great first two performances (two goals and three assists)."

Of course, the Canucks could also look at Caleb Malhotra with the third pick. Both players bring serious upside, but Stenberg's combination of skill, production, and a Sedin-era connection makes him a compelling choice. Whether it's Stenberg or Malhotra, Vancouver is poised to add a top-tier talent to its lineup—and maybe, just maybe, a little bit of that Swedish magic.
