On a quiet Saturday evening, May 9, the Amarillo community gathered to honor five beloved pickleball players whose lives were tragically cut short in a plane crash near Wimberly, Texas, just days earlier on April 30. The candlelight vigil, held in the parking lot of the Netplex Athletic Center, drew nearly 100 people, all standing in respectful silence as the sun set.
The victims—Justin Appling (the pilot and team member), Hayden Dillard, Brooke Skypala, Stacy Hedrick, and Seren Wilson—were remembered not just as athletes, but as pillars of the community. Their flight from Amarillo to New Braunfels National Airport ended in tragedy when the plane's trajectory became erratic before crashing in a wooded area. No one survived.
Amarillo City Councilmember Don Tipps, a fellow pickleball enthusiast, delivered a heartfelt eulogy alongside several local ministers. The crowd, clutching candles, listened through tears as Tipps emphasized the profound impact these five individuals had on everyone around them. "The biggest thing we need to remember is the impact they made, not just on our pickleball community, but overall in our entire community," Tipps said. "Amarillo is strong. People come together and surround those in mourning."
Meaghan Collier also shared tearful memories of her friends before the ceremony turned to Tipps, who highlighted the national outpouring of support. Pickleball communities from across the country reached out with meal trains, donations, and emotional support for the grieving families. "We've hugged each other's necks; we've all shed a tear," Tipps said. "It's just unifying. When this happened, we realized that pickleball is more than a game—it's a family."
For those who play this fast-growing sport, the tragedy is a stark reminder of the bonds formed on and off the court. As the candlelight flickered in the evening air, the message from the vigil was clear: live life to the fullest, love big, and cherish every moment with your pickleball family.
