As the Florida high school girls flag football season reaches its thrilling climax, all eyes are on the state championships set for May 15-16 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' One Bucs Place. With the playoffs in full swing, the competition for the 2025-26 Girls Flag Football Player of the Year is heating up. Here are five standout candidates who have dominated the field this season.
Makenna Werr, Alonso Ravens (Senior, QB)
Leading the nation's top-ranked team, Werr has the Ravens poised for a repeat as Florida Class 4A state champions. Her numbers this season are even more impressive than her standout junior year: 4,980 passing yards and 81 touchdowns on 427-of-666 completions. That's 10 more touchdowns than last season, with potentially three games remaining. Don't be surprised if she surpasses 6,000 yards and approaches 100 touchdowns by season's end.
Kendall Cook, Lake Mary Lancers (Senior, QB)
Cook made history as the first girls flag football player to receive a Division I Power 4 offer, courtesy of Nebraska. Already committed to Georgia for soccer, she delivered an unforgettable 2025 season. Cook threw for an eye-popping 7,083 yards and 112 touchdowns, while adding 313 rushing yards and three scores on the ground. Her dual-threat ability makes her a constant nightmare for defenses.
Jordyn Akey, Eagle's View Academy (Senior, QB)
Akey became the first player ever to commit to a Division I Power 4 program when she chose Nebraska in April. Over the last two seasons, she has amassed 8,980 passing yards and 171 touchdowns through the air, plus 2,769 rushing yards and 35 scores. This season alone, she completed 384 of 570 passes for 4,545 yards and 89 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,526 yards and 22 touchdowns. Akey's all-around game is truly elite.
Isabella Trujillo, Cypress Bay Lightning (Junior, QB)
Trujillo has emerged as a dynamic playmaker, leading her team deep into the playoffs. Her ability to extend plays and deliver accurate passes under pressure has been key to Cypress Bay's success. With another year of eligibility, she's already drawing attention from college scouts nationwide.
These athletes are redefining what's possible in girls flag football, setting new standards for excellence on the field. Whether you're a player looking for inspiration or a fan of the game, these stars are ones to watch as the season comes to a dramatic close.
