Goalkeeper Mala Grohs, who battled back from cancer to play professional football again, will leave Bayern Munich women's team at the end of the season. The 24-year-old was diagnosed with a malign tumour in her tonsils and underwent surgery in December 2024.

In a story that embodies the true spirit of resilience, Bayern Munich women's goalkeeper Mala Grohs is set to leave the club at the end of the season—a departure that marks the closing of a remarkable chapter in women's football.

The 24-year-old shot-stopper's journey has been nothing short of inspirational. Diagnosed with a malignant tumor in her tonsils, Grohs underwent surgery in December 2024, facing a battle far greater than any on the pitch. But in true athlete fashion, she refused to let adversity define her. By March 2025, she had made a triumphant return to competitive action, stepping back onto the field in the Champions League against Olympique Lyon—a moment that resonated far beyond the football world.

Grohs has since been competing for the starting spot with Ena Mahmutovic, who recently featured in the Champions League semi-final defeat to Barcelona. Her last Bundesliga start came in a win at Werder Bremen last week, and she will receive an official send-off at Saturday's final home league match against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Reflecting on her time at Bayern, Bianca Rech, director of women's football, praised Grohs's journey: "Mala came to us at a young age from Bochum in 2019 and worked her way up to the first team with great determination and discipline, becoming our number one. Her serious illness greatly affected us all, yet Mala kept going with impressive strength, courage and positivity, setting an example to many people."

During her time with the Bavarian giants, Grohs has amassed an impressive trophy cabinet: five league titles, one German Cup, and two Supercups. As she prepares to move on, Grohs shared a heartfelt reflection: "The path wasn't always a straight one. It demanded everything from me at various points and, in return, gave me so much more at others. Now I can look ahead in good health and look back with pride and gratitude."

Her story is a powerful reminder that the greatest victories often happen off the pitch—and that every comeback is a testament to the human spirit.
