Canadiens Highlights: Young Habs Find A Way To Win

The Montreal Canadiens showed once again why experience isn't everything in the NHL playoffs. In a nail-biting Game 7 against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday night, the young Habs dug deep and found a way to win, securing a 2-1 victory and a hard-fought 4-3 series win.

Before the puck even dropped, the Canadiens got a major boost. Defenseman Noah Dobson was activated for his first game of the postseason, bringing much-needed stability to the blue line. To make room, Arber Xhekaj was scratched—a tough call that paid off.

Let's be honest: this wasn't a masterpiece. The Habs managed just four shots in the first two periods—a franchise playoff record for futility in a single period. But when it mattered most, their captain stepped up. Nick Suzuki, who had been quiet offensively all series, chose the perfect moment to score his first goal of the series, tipping a point shot late in the third period. It was also the first time the top line of Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Juraj Slafkovsky connected for a 5-on-5 goal against the Lightning.

While the Canadiens finally broke through, the Lightning dominated the flow, outshooting Montreal 19-4 through 40 minutes. That put immense pressure on rookie goaltender Jakub Dobes, who was making his first career playoff start in an elimination game. Dobes was outstanding, holding the fort with composure beyond his years. But even he couldn't keep Tampa Bay off the board forever—the Lightning eventually tied it up, setting the stage for a dramatic final frame.

With everything on the line, the Canadiens found their legs in the third period. Suzuki's late goal proved to be the difference, and the young Habs held on for a series-clinching win. It wasn't pretty, but in the playoffs, style points don't matter. What matters is finding a way—and Montreal did just that.
