West Ham United may have suffered a tough 3-0 loss at Brentford, but former midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker believes the Hammers are on the right track—and it’s all about the mindset.
Despite the scoreline, West Ham showed plenty of attacking promise, hitting the woodwork three times and having a goal narrowly ruled out for offside. The performance, Reo-Coker argues, was far from a disaster. "I've been in a relegation scrap, and when you look at West Ham, the momentum and performances have been there—that's massive," he told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.
The real concern for manager Nuno Espirito Santo lies in the defensive lapses, especially with league leaders Arsenal coming to town next weekend. But Reo-Coker insists the focus should stay on the positives. "The result doesn't reflect the performance. Now it's up to Nuno to convey to the players that the performance was still there—to keep that belief and momentum going into the next run of fixtures."
He highlighted the cheap penalty conceded against Brentford as the game's turning point, calling it the kind of mistake you can't afford in a relegation battle. Still, he praised the team's resilience. "They had opportunities, hit the post a few times, but didn't take their chances. When you're in that fight, it's about the mindset. A good manager takes the positives and says, 'Bad day at the office, but look at all the good.'"
With plenty of games left, Reo-Coker believes West Ham are still very much in the fight. "If they play like that, they'll get the right results. It can still go down to the wire—and they're still in it."
