The Wolverines have reloaded for the 2026-27 season, but is it enough for Michigan Basketball to repeat as national champions? We discuss:

The confetti has barely settled, and already the question on every Michigan fan's mind is: Can the Wolverines do it again? That incredible run to the national championship last month was pure magic, but as the offseason dust clears, we're getting a much clearer picture of what the 2026-27 season will look like—and whether Michigan has what it takes to run it back.

Let's be honest: repeating as national champions is one of the hardest feats in sports. The Wolverines are losing four of their five starters, including some all-time greats. There's still a faint hope that Morez Johnson Jr. might return, but otherwise, Roddy Gayle Jr. and Will Tschetter are also moving on. That's a lot of talent to replace.

But Dusty May and his staff didn't hit the panic button. Instead, they reloaded with purpose. Michigan landed the 10th-ranked transfer portal class and the fourth-ranked high school recruiting class in the nation. That's not a rebuild—that's a retool.

So, will there be a step back? Almost certainly. The 2025-26 Wolverines were one of the best college basketball teams of all time. But the real question is: how big of a step? By most projections, it won't be a major drop-off.

Start with the backcourt. Michigan returns arguably the best guard duo in America: Final Four Most Outstanding Player Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney. These two can go toe-to-toe with any backcourt in the country. Add in five-star freshman Brandon McCoy Jr., an athletic freak who can change the game in an instant, and the perimeter looks dangerous.

Up front, May pulled off a masterclass. J.P. Estrella (Tennessee) and Jalen Reed (LSU) were criminally underused at their previous stops and are ready to break out in the Big Ten. Then there's Moustapha Thiam (Cincinnati), arguably the best center available in the transfer portal. Can this trio replicate what Johnson, Aday Mara, and Yaxel Lendeborg did? That's a tall order, but they're still expected to be one of the top frontcourts in the conference—and the country.

Of course, it's not just about Michigan. The Gators are looming large. Florida shocked the basketball world by retaining T—and they look like a legitimate threat. The road to a repeat is never easy, but the Wolverines have put themselves in position to make another deep run.
