Can Illinois win the Big Ten in 2027? Conference opponents suggest a real chance

A good slate for next season.

The Big Ten Conference dropped its opponent slate for the 2027 season on Tuesday, and Illinois fans have plenty of reasons to feel optimistic. With a 20-game conference schedule now the norm for the ninth straight year, the Illini are set up with a favorable mix of rivals and winnable matchups that could fuel a legitimate run at the Big Ten title.

This season, every team faces each conference opponent once—either at home or on the road—while three teams appear twice in a home-and-home series. The league has wisely protected its classic rivalries, including Michigan vs. Michigan State, Wisconsin vs. Minnesota, and the always-heated Illinois vs. Northwestern showdown. The four West Coast schools will also play each other twice, preserving those former Pac-12 connections and cutting down on travel.

For Illinois, that means another double dose of Northwestern, keeping the hardwood version of the Land of Lincoln rivalry alive and well. The Illini already face Northwestern and Purdue annually in football, and now that tradition extends to basketball. Speaking of Purdue, Illinois missed playing the Boilermakers twice last season, but they’ll renew that rivalry with a home-and-home in 2027—a natural fit given the two schools are less than 100 miles apart. Wisconsin also lands on the two-game list, with battles scheduled in both Madison and Champaign.

The scheduling feels more authentic this year. Instead of forcing Illinois into repeat matchups with Nebraska or Maryland—as happened last season—the Big Ten has leaned into geography and history. It just makes more sense for the Illini to square off regularly against familiar foes like Purdue, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana. These are the games that build real conference identity and energize the fan base.

Here’s a look at Illinois’ full conference slate for 2027, with official game dates expected in September:

Home: Iowa, Michigan State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Penn State, UCLA, USC

Away: Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon, Rutgers, Washington

With a manageable road schedule and the chance to host heavyweights like Ohio State and Michigan State, the Illini have a real path to contention. If the team gels early, don’t be surprised if Champaign is buzzing deep into conference play.
