The IPL 2026 playoff race is heating up, and veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has dropped his bold predictions—along with a stark reality check for Chennai Super Kings fans. After Kolkata Knight Riders' dominant win over Delhi Capitals, the points table has shifted yet again, leaving CSK with a mountain to climb.
KKR kept their playoff dreams alive with a commanding chase of 143, powered by Finn Allen's maiden IPL century. Despite early setbacks, Allen and Cameron Green steadied the ship, guiding Kolkata to a comfortable victory and tightening an already congested playoff battle.
At the top, Sunrisers Hyderabad lead the pack with 14 points from 11 matches, while Punjab Kings sit second with 13 points from 10 games. Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals hold the third and fourth spots with 12 points each, and Gujarat Titans are hot on their heels with the same tally—though their negative net run rate could prove costly down the stretch.
For Chennai Super Kings, currently sixth with 10 points from 10 matches, the path to the top four is narrow and unforgiving. Speaking on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin laid out his playoff forecast with clarity.
"SRH and RCB are almost confirmed for the playoffs," Ashwin stated. "The remaining two spots will be a fierce battle between Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals, and Punjab Kings."
But what about CSK? Ashwin didn't mince words. "For CSK to qualify, they must win all four of their remaining matches. There's no room for error. Even reaching 16 points won't guarantee a spot—they'll need Rajasthan to lose three of their last four, Punjab to drop points, and a strong net run rate to tip the scales in their favor."
The veteran spinner emphasized that net run rate could be the deciding factor, especially with crucial matches against Lucknow Super Giants looming. "That's where net run rate becomes critical," he added. "Every run counts, and CSK can't afford to leave anything to chance."
