A powerful new partnership is set to transform youth sports leadership, bringing together one of the most prestigious awards in athletics with a leading research institute to empower the next generation of team captains.
The Heisman Trophy Trust and the Aspen Institute have joined forces to launch the Captains Leadership Academy, a groundbreaking national initiative designed to develop high school team captains into community leaders who can drive meaningful change. The program, set to be officially announced on Tuesday, May 5, aims to provide young athletes with the training, mentorship, and tools needed to tackle real-world challenges—from improving access to youth sports to addressing mental health and community well-being.
"The academy speaks directly to the potential impact of youth sports participation on American society," says Vincent Minjares, program manager of the Aspen Institute Sports & Society Program. "Improving the leadership ability of sports captains strengthens the quality of the sports experience for themselves and their teammates, while also helping transfer those leadership skills to future careers and community impact."
At its core, the program taps into something every athlete understands: the unique value of a captain to a team, and the often-underestimated role sports play in shaping character. The Aspen Institute's Project Play, widely recognized for studying sports participation and developing solutions to access barriers, will lead the programming with substantial backing from the Heisman Foundation.
This partnership marks the largest single grant in Heisman's history dedicated to youth development through sports and education. But the involvement doesn't stop at funding. Several Heisman Trophy winners, including Tim Brown and Charlie Ward, have already expressed interest in participating directly in the program.
"We're here to support, to help build it, and to make sure that we have access to the winners," says Jeff Price, Heisman's CEO. "We want this to be something that isn't just going through the motions and you walk away with a certificate."
For young athletes dreaming of wearing the "C" on their jerseys, this program represents more than just leadership training—it's a pathway to becoming the kind of leader who inspires both on and off the field.
