CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Cameron Young is riding a wave of momentum on the PGA Tour, and he's showing no signs of slowing down. Fresh off a commanding six-stroke victory at the Cadillac Championship last week, Young fired an electrifying 8-under 63 at Quail Hollow on Saturday, putting him just two shots behind leader Alex Fitzpatrick at the Truist Championship.

Fitzpatrick, who only earned his PGA Tour card two weeks ago after teaming with his brother Matt to win the Zurich Classic, sits at 14-under 199 through 54 holes. He holds a one-shot lead over Norway's Kristoffer Reitan, who also carded a 64. For Young, the round was a near-masterpiece—and a brush with history.

Young needed to play the final two holes in 2 under to break Rory McIlroy's course record of 10-under 61, set at Quail Hollow in 2015. But his birdie putt on No. 17 stopped inches short, and his drive on the 18th found pine straw behind a tree, forcing a punch-out that led to his only bogey of the day. "I know (the record was) 10 under and I knew I was at nine," Young said. "But that wasn't my thought. I was just trying to hit it somewhere right of the hole on 17 and hit a couple good shots on 18. Unfortunately had one of my few bad swings of the day on 18."

Before that hiccup, Young was unstoppable. He launched a 238-yard shot from a fairway bunker to within a few feet of the hole on No. 7 for eagle, then birdied six of his next nine holes. The performance underscores why Young is one of the hottest players on tour—and why he's a name to watch as he seeks back-to-back wins.

Meanwhile, Alex Fitzpatrick is making a name for himself in his own right. While older brother Matt—a former U.S. Open champion and world No. 4—was among the pre-tournament favorites, it's Alex who's stealing the spotlight this week. After rebounding from his only bogey of the day with a tee shot to 8 feet on the par-3 17th for birdie, Fitzpatrick said having his brother's guidance has been invaluable. "I feel like he's been and done everything that I want to do in the game—whether that's Ryder Cup and win majors," Alex said. With a one-shot lead and a newfound confidence, he's proving that the Fitzpatrick name carries weight on any leaderboard.
