The PGA Tour FedEx Cup standings just got a shakeup—and it all comes down to a weekend off. Scottie Scheffler, who has been a dominant force this season, decided to sit out the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow Club, the very course where he won the PGA Championship last year. That decision opened the door for Cameron Young to reclaim the top spot.
Young, who tied for 10th at the Truist, now leads the FedEx Cup points list by just 73 points over Scheffler. It's a narrow margin that could swing dramatically at this week's PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club near Philadelphia. The winner there will earn 750 points—more than enough to reshuffle the leaderboard. Scheffler could leapfrog back into first with a finish of 17th or higher, provided Young misses the cut.
This three-week stretch has been a points bonanza, with 2,150 FedEx Cup points up for grabs for winners at the Truist and Cadillac Championships. But the pace cools off soon: three of the next four events will offer just 500 points to the winner, with The Memorial in June serving as the next signature event two weeks before the U.S. Open.
Beyond the top two, several players made big moves last week. Brandt Snedeker jumped 85 spots to 63rd after winning the Myrtle Beach Classic, while Mark Hubbard climbed 59 spots to 91st with a runner-up finish at the same event. Sungjae Im surged 48 spots to 56th after tying for fifth at the Truist, and Kristoffer Reitan shot up 41 spots to 13th with his Truist victory. Beau Hossler also made a notable leap, rising 29 spots to 103rd after a tie for third at Myrtle Beach.
With the PGA Championship on the horizon, the FedEx Cup race is tighter than ever. Will Scheffler quickly reclaim his throne, or can Young hold off the defending major champion? Stay tuned—and make sure your golf gear is ready for the action.
