The PGA Tour FedEx Cup standings have a new leader just in time for the season's second major. Cameron Young has climbed to the top spot after Scottie Scheffler took a week off, but don't expect the world No. 1 to stay idle for long.
Scheffler had been dominating the points list following his third consecutive runner-up finish at the Cadillac Championship on May 3. However, he decided to sit out the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow Club—the very course where he won his PGA Championship last year. That decision opened the door for Young, who seized the opportunity with a tie for 10th place at the Truist event, leapfrogging Scheffler into first place.
Now, all eyes turn to this week's PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club near Philadelphia. Scheffler sits just 73 points behind Young, and with 750 FedEx Cup points on the line for the winner, the lead could change hands quickly. In fact, Scheffler could reclaim the top spot with a finish of 17th or better, provided Young misses the cut. It's a high-stakes scenario that adds extra drama to an already major week.
The PGA Championship also marks the end of a three-week stretch that offered 2,150 FedEx Cup points to winners (700 each at the Truist and Cadillac events). Looking ahead, the next four tournaments will award 500 points to the winner, with The Memorial in June serving as a signature event just two weeks before the U.S. Open.
Several other players made significant moves in the standings after strong performances. Brandt Snedeker jumped 85 spots from 148th to 63rd after winning the Myrtle Beach Classic. Mark Hubbard rose 59 spots to 91st with a second-place finish at the same event. Sungjae Im climbed 48 spots to 56th after tying for fifth at the Truist Championship, while Kristoffer Reitan surged 41 spots to 13th by winning the Truist outright. Beau Hossler also gained ground, moving up 29 spots to 103rd after tying for third at Myrtle Beach.
With the PGA Championship upon us, the FedEx Cup race is heating up. Will Scheffler bounce back immediately, or can Young hold onto the lead? One thing's for sure: this week's action at Aronimink will set the tone for the rest of the season.
