Cam Young is making a statement at the Cadillac Championship, and the golf world is taking notice. The 28-year-old New Yorker has been nothing short of spectacular this week at Trump National Doral, posting rounds of 64 and 67 to build a commanding five-shot lead heading into the weekend.
Young, currently ranked fourth in the world, has been one of the PGA Tour's standout performers this season. But this week in Miami, he's elevated his game to an entirely new level. After a hard-fought second round of 67 on Friday afternoon, Young admitted to feeling fortunate but remained composed when asked about the pressure of holding such a large lead.
"I feel like I've been around the lead quite a bit, I'm not particularly uncomfortable," Young told the media. "I've liked this golf course thus far. So that being said, I'll take whatever advantage you're going to give me. There's a lot of guys right there, four or five back, and I'm sure somebody will be 4-under through 5 tomorrow so you just have to be ready for that and go from there."
His confidence is well-founded. Young's ball-striking has been elite all week, ranking T-15th in strokes gained off the tee and fifth in strokes gained approach through 36 holes. But it's his short game that has truly set him apart. He sits 16th in strokes gained around the greens and, remarkably, first in strokes gained putting. That combination has propelled him to the top spot in strokes gained total at 11.667 strokes above the field.
If Young can maintain this level of play over the weekend, the Cadillac Championship trophy will be hard to deny him. For now, he's proving that he's unquestionably one of the best golfers on the planet—and a player to watch every time he steps on the course.
