New Green Bay Packers special-teams coordinator Cam Achord said he believes there are ‘pieces’ in place to improve the units.

When Cam Achord stepped up to the microphone on Monday, it was more than just a press conference—it was a declaration of intent. The Green Bay Packers' new special-teams coordinator, hired by head coach Matt LaFleur back in February, is ready to tackle one of the franchise's longest-running headaches.

For the better part of 25 years, special teams have been a sore spot for the Packers. And while last season's coverage units showed some promise—ranking fourth in net punt coverage and 11th in starting field position after kickoffs—the return game told a different story. Abysmal rankings of 29th and 21st in punt and kick returns respectively, combined with kicker Brandon McManus's midseason quad injury and three critical misses (two field goals and an extra point) in the season-ending wild-card loss to the Chicago Bears, left fans frustrated.

But Achord isn't dwelling on the past. Instead, he sees a foundation already in place. "I think there's pieces in place, there's players here," he said, his confidence clear. "You're not going into a situation where we're starting from scratch with everything." He pointed to the team's toughness and key contributors like punter Daniel Whelan as reasons for optimism.

With a decade of NFL special-teams coaching experience—including four years as coordinator for the New England Patriots under Bill Belichick—Achord knows what it takes to build a winning unit. "There's enough pieces that you're like, 'Hey, we have an opportunity to be successful in the kicking game,'" he added.

For Packers fans, it's a refreshing vote of confidence. The pieces are there. Now, it's time to put them together—and maybe upgrade your game-day gear while you're at it.
