Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark delivered a signature moment of humor after her team's first win of the 2026 season—but head coach Stephanie White wasn't about to let her off the hook that easily.
The Fever defeated the Los Angeles Sparks 87-78 on Wednesday night, with Clark posting 24 points and nine assists in a strong bounce-back performance following a season-opening loss to the Dallas Wings. Indiana held L.A. under 80 points and showed noticeable improvement on defense, rotating better on the perimeter and making life difficult for the Sparks after a rough defensive showing in the opener.
But during the postgame huddle, White made it clear she still expects more from her squad. That's when Clark fired back with a playful challenge of her own.
"We only gave up 78 points," Clark said with a grin. "We're going to win a lot of games if we do that. What do you want?"
White didn't miss a beat: "I want more. Coaches always want more. That's the nature of the beast."
Even after the victory, White pointed to areas for growth—specifically the 11 fast-break points the Fever allowed against L.A. She stressed the importance of maintaining defensive intensity for a team with championship aspirations.
"I just think that there's a certain mentality that it takes to will yourself to defend every possession," White said. "We are in the growth process to get there."
The Fever looked far sharper defending ball screens compared to their opener against Dallas, where they surrendered 107 points. For a team still finding its identity, that kind of progress—and a little laughter along the way—might be exactly what they need.
