Caitlin Clark’s fitness has been put under the microscope. It fueled up after the Fever guard faced back stiffness in her last game.

Caitlin Clark is opening up about the mental and physical challenges she's facing as she works her way back to full strength. The Indiana Fever guard recently played 30 minutes in a game—her highest workload in months—but admitted it wasn't easy.

After dealing with back stiffness that forced her to briefly head to the locker room mid-game, Clark was seen on the bench using a heat therapy pad. Still, she managed to return to the court and drop 20 points. But as she later shared, the battle wasn't just physical.

"You just become hyper cautious to certain things," Clark told ESPN's Kendra Andrews. "When my back tightened up, I think I almost got confidence from that, because I came back in and I played eight more minutes, and I felt great the last eight minutes. But it's going to take me a little bit to really get over this mental hurdle of trusting my body."

It's a familiar challenge for any athlete returning from injury. Clark's 2025 season has been marred by setbacks—a groin injury and an ankle bruise limited her to just 13 games. Now, after nine months away from regular-season action, she's navigating the tricky balance between pushing herself and staying safe.

Fever insider Scott Agness pointed out that nerves may have played a role in her muscle tightness. "I got to wonder how much of it was probably her being tense and anxious, and a little nervous for this game just because how long it has been," he said.

Clark herself admitted to feeling anxious about her return. The physicality of the WNBA also took a toll, especially given her limited minutes in preseason—where she never played more than 20 minutes as a precaution. The last time she logged over 30 minutes in a game, the stakes were even higher.

For Clark, the road back is as much about mental resilience as it is about physical recovery. And as any athlete knows, that's a hurdle worth clearing one game at a time.
