BYU's basketball program just added a major weapon to its arsenal for the upcoming season. Head coach Kevin Young has secured a commitment from Syracuse transfer Tyler Betsey, marking his second key portal acquisition this offseason.
Betsey, a 6-foot-8 stretch forward, brings a coveted skill to Provo: elite three-point shooting. As a sophomore with the Orange, he shot a blistering 40.7% from beyond the arc, a team-high mark. His accuracy only improved in conference play, where he drained 44% of his attempts, ranking fourth among all ACC players.
This kind of floor-spacing is exactly what the Cougars need. After a season where perimeter scoring was inconsistent, adding a long, athletic forward who can consistently stretch defenses is a perfect fit for the modern, pace-and-space game. Betsey averaged 6.7 points and 2.8 rebounds in 31 games for Syracuse last year.
His journey to BYU includes a stop at Cincinnati, giving him prior experience in the competitive Big 12 landscape. As a former top-50 national recruit, Betsey's potential is significant. For BYU fans and players alike, this move signals an exciting shift towards a more dynamic and dangerous offensive attack next winter.
