Two days after Butler announced it parted ways with former coach Austin Parkinson, it hired an alumnus labeled as a "program-builder."

Butler University didn't waste any time finding its new leader. Just two days after parting ways with former coach Austin Parkinson, the Bulldogs have turned to a familiar face, hiring alumna Maria Marchesano as the new head coach of the women's basketball program.

Marchesano, hailed by the university as a "proven program-builder," returns to her alma mater after a highly successful five-year stint at Purdue Fort Wayne. There, she compiled an impressive 168-92 record and led the Mastodons to three consecutive 20-win seasons and three WNIT appearances, establishing a clear blueprint for building a competitive team.

"We are excited to bring Maria home to Butler," said athletic director Grant Leiendecker. "She is a proven program-builder, a coach who has achieved success at every university she has been. Maria will bring her immense talent, energy and commitment to Butler, a place that is incredibly special to her as someone who wore our jersey."

This homecoming is a full-circle moment for the Fort Wayne native. Marchesano was a standout guard for the Bulldogs from 2001 to 2005, finishing her career as the second-best three-point shooter in program history at 41.8%. Her deep understanding of Butler's culture and history is seen as a major asset as she looks to elevate the program in the competitive Big East conference.

With 234 career wins across multiple coaching stops, Marchesano brings a track record of sustained success. Her challenge now is to translate that winning formula to her alma mater, injecting new energy and a clear vision into Butler women's basketball. For fans and players alike, this hire signals an ambitious new chapter focused on building a consistent winner.
