Matt Bush, the Welsh Para-taekwondo star, has proven that even sleepless nights and new-dad duties can't slow him down. Just two months after welcoming his second child, Bush powered through the challenges of fatherhood to claim European gold for Great Britain at the European Taekwondo Championships in Munich.
Competing in the K44 men's +80kg category, Bush faced Croatia's Ivan Mikulic in a thrilling final that came down to the wire. After a strong first round, Bush saw his opponent adjust and take the lead in the second. But with seconds left on the clock, Bush looked to his coach, got the nod, and unleashed a flurry of kicks to snatch an 18-16 victory. "I just went into the next gear and pushed the pace on him," Bush said, describing the dramatic finish.
The road to gold was anything but smooth. "It's been a busy, busy year," Bush told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast. "I've got my little boy now, my little girl who's two—it's full-on. Sleepless nights and stuff, when recovery is key—my main recovery method is sleep, so when that goes out the window, it gets quite hard." But for Bush, these are just hurdles. "It doesn't matter to me. On fight day, I'm going to get up, get my kit on, get out there, and try to win."
Bush's victory was part of a strong showing for the British team, which competed alongside Olympic athletes in a packed arena. "We took a high-quality team, and the return was massive. Almost everyone medalled," he said. Fellow Welsh athlete Lauren Williams also impressed, earning a silver medal in the women's +73kg final after a tough match against Germany's Lorena Brandl.
For Bush, this European title is another milestone in a career defined by resilience. Whether balancing parenthood or adapting mid-fight, he's proving that the best athletes rise to any challenge. As he continues to chase glory on the world stage, one thing is clear: Matt Bush isn't just winning medals—he's showing that with the right mindset, you can overcome anything.
