As the postseason curtain rises, the McAlester Buffaloes are stepping onto the diamond with a quiet confidence that could spell trouble for their opponents. Fresh off a regular season that saw them finish third in Class-5A-4 with a 20-17 record (8-4 in district play), the Buffaloes are set to clash with Booker T. Washington in the first round of the regional tournament this Thursday in Claremore.
On paper, McAlester looks like the clear favorite. The Hornets, who finished sixth in Class-5A-3 with a 10-20 mark (5-9 in district), are in the midst of a rebuilding year after graduating a wealth of senior talent last season. But Coach Justin Mullins isn't letting his team get complacent. "They're a team that, if you don't go play and you give them a lot of stuff, they're going to be in the ball game and have a chance to beat you for sure," Mullins said, acknowledging the experience of Booker T. Washington's long-tenured coach, Potocnik, who has been at the helm for decades. "You know he'll have them ready to play."
Should the Buffaloes advance, a tantalizing rematch could be on the horizon against host Claremore. The Zebras, who dominated their district with a 12-2 record and a 22-12 overall mark, faced McAlester just two weeks ago in the 5A Baseball Shootout. In that game, the Buffaloes emerged with a gritty 5-3 victory at Mike Deak Field. That win isn't just a memory—it's a confidence booster. "They're a quality club," Mullins said. "We beat them 5-3 in the shootout here, so we feel like we match up well with them."
But the Buffaloes aren't just looking at the next game; they're eyeing a deep postseason run. With a balanced mix of grit and talent, Mullins believes his squad can compete with anyone in the state. "I think we've got a great chance," he said. "It's a great opportunity for us because, like I've told the kids, it's more about us than it is about anybody else. If we go out there and we compete in the zone and we swing the bats like we're capable of, I feel like we can beat anybody. I think the sky's the limit with these guys."
First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Claremore, where the Buffaloes will look to turn their postseason dreams into reality—one swing, one pitch, one win at a time.
