Buckeye Valley baseball star Jace Haunhorst is swinging for the fences—and hitting them. The standout slugger has been named the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Boys Athlete of the Week for May 4-10, thanks to a pair of jaw-dropping performances at the plate.
Haunhorst crushed grand slams in back-to-back wins over Bexley, powering his team to a 13-1 blowout and a dramatic 6-3 victory. The latter came with everything on the line: a game-winning blast in the bottom of the seventh inning, sending the crowd home buzzing. It's the kind of clutch moment that defines a season and cements a player's reputation.
Fans clearly took notice. Haunhorst earned a commanding 96.1% of the vote, leaving Delaware Hayes tennis standout Drake LaMar far behind at 3.9%. LaMar still put together an impressive week of his own, going 3-0 with three straight-set wins—two at first doubles and one at first singles. But this week belonged to Haunhorst, whose power at the plate was simply unstoppable.
Looking at the bigger picture, the award has recognized a wide range of talent across central Ohio. Past winners include basketball stars like Kendall Owens (Columbus Academy), Ty Gilbert (Newark), and Alexis Wooten (Hamilton Township), as well as athletes from sports like swimming, hockey, football, and bowling. This week, though, it's baseball's turn in the spotlight—and Haunhorst has earned every bit of it.
