The Baltimore Ravens entered the offseason with a clear mission: upgrade their pass rush. And while the headlines initially swirled around a potential blockbuster trade for Maxx Crosby, that dream scenario quickly unraveled. But the Ravens didn't panic. Instead, they pivoted swiftly, signing veteran edge rusher Trey Hendrickson to a deal that gave new defensive coordinator Jesse Minter the disruptive force his unit desperately needed.

At first glance, it seemed like a straightforward win for Baltimore. But as Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht recently revealed on The Pat McAfee Show, the Ravens weren't the only team in the hunt for Hendrickson. In fact, the Buccaneers came dangerously close to stealing him away.

"We were in on Trey Hendrickson a little bit," Licht admitted. "We felt a little bit dejected at first, but now, maybe it worked in our favor."

That "maybe" is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Licht was, of course, referring to Tampa Bay's eventual acquisition of rookie pass rusher Rueben Bain, a player the front office believes can develop into a cornerstone of their defense. Meanwhile, the Ravens addressed their own needs by drafting Zion Young in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. In the end, both teams walked away with their guy.

It's easy to see why Hendrickson was so coveted. Since joining the Cincinnati Bengals in 2021, he's been a consistent nightmare for quarterbacks, racking up double-digit sacks season after season. Even in years where the numbers dipped slightly, his presence on the field was undeniable, drawing double teams and creating opportunities for teammates.

For Ravens fans, this behind-the-scenes glimpse only underscores how close the team came to losing out on a player who could be the missing piece for their defense. And for Tampa Bay, it's a reminder that sometimes, the best moves are the ones you don't make.
