Bryson DeChambeau has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons after a tough week at Aronimink. The LIV Golf star missed the cut at the PGA Championship, finishing seven over par through two rounds—marking the first time since 2017 that he's missed consecutive cuts in majors.
It looked like there might be a glimmer of hope after his opening 76, with the cut line seemingly within reach as he teed off for round two. But DeChambeau quickly unraveled, falling to 10 over par at one point. Despite a late rally, his hopes of capturing a third major title evaporated in dramatic fashion.
Golf Channel's Rex Hoggard shed light on DeChambeau's struggles during a recent podcast, revealing a conversation with an equipment representative who witnessed the golfer's turmoil firsthand. "He is in meltdown mode," Hoggard recounted the rep saying, noting that DeChambeau was "clearly searching for something all week long" on the range.
Hoggard wasn't surprised by the missed cut, pointing to the uncertainty surrounding LIV Golf's future after rumors that the Public Investment Fund might withdraw its funding at year's end. "The argument was that Bryson was distracted," Hoggard explained. While fellow LIV star Jon Rahm seemed to embrace an "epiphany" about focusing on his contract and game, DeChambeau appeared to struggle with the same variables.
Interestingly, Hoggard noted he was more shocked by Tommy Fleetwood's missed cut—calling the Englishman his pick for a great week at a course that seemed tailor-made for his game. For DeChambeau, however, the warning signs were there long before he stepped onto the first tee.
