The Brusly Panthers are heading back to Sulphur, and this time, they've got unfinished business on their minds. After falling just short in last year's Division II state championship series, the No. 1-seeded Panthers are hungry for redemption as they prepare to face No. 3 seed Lutcher in a best-of-three showdown beginning Thursday at MacMurry Park.
For most high schools across Louisiana, baseball season has already wrapped up, but Brusly is still swinging—and swinging hard. Under the guidance of head coach Jason Lemoine, the Panthers have stormed through the playoffs, earning their second consecutive trip to the state tournament. Their path was paved by a dominant sweep of Lakeshore in the semifinals, winning 6-2 in Game 1 and 9-5 in Game 2.
Game 1 was a showcase for senior standout Aubrey St. Angelo, who delivered three hits in an 8-2 victory, including a solo home run to left field that gave the Panthers a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Lakeshore briefly cut the deficit in half with two runs in the fourth, but Brusly answered with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win.
Game 2 was even more electric, as the Panthers jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the top of the first inning. The rally started with St. Angelo scoring on a passed ball, followed by a bases-loaded walk from Isaiah Daley. Coy Purpera drove in a run on a bunt single, and Tre Daley and Jackson Betts both scored on bases-loaded walks. Brody Bourgoyne capped the inning with a sacrifice fly, while right-fielder Tassin went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
Now, all eyes are on Sulphur, where the Panthers will look to avenge last year's heartbreaking three-game loss to North DeSoto. With a potent lineup and a chip on their shoulder, Brusly is ready to write a new chapter—and bring home the championship trophy.
