Boston could look to sign a centerman to an extension this summer.

The Boston Bruins have plenty to be optimistic about this offseason, and one key move could shape their future: locking up a 30-goal center before he hits the open market.

After a season that exceeded expectations, the Bruins made a surprise playoff appearance but fell to the Buffalo Sabres in six games during the first round. Still, it was a step forward for a team many analysts had written off before the puck dropped.

A major catalyst for that success was Pavel Zacha. The 27-year-old centerman enjoyed a career year, notching 30 goals—a personal best—along with 35 assists for 65 points. His performance on the second line gave Boston a much-needed offensive boost, and now the team faces a crucial decision: extend him or risk losing him.

According to Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic, the Bruins would be wise to start talks as soon as possible. "The do-it-all center has one year remaining on his deal," Shinzawa wrote. "He will be eligible to sign an extension on July 1. He is one of Sturm's favorites because of his versatility, hockey sense and defensive responsibility."

Zacha is entering the final year of his four-year, $19 million contract and can begin negotiating an extension on July 1. While it's unclear if both sides will reach an agreement, the player himself has made his intentions clear.

"I feel I turned my career here a little bit," Zacha said. "Of course you'd want to stay here. It's also not up to me fully. So we'll see how that goes. But I like Boston. It would be fun to be here for a long time."

Acquired from the New Jersey Devils in July 2022 in exchange for Erik Haula, Zacha has found a home in Boston. For a team looking to build on its playoff return, securing a versatile, defensively responsible center who can also light the lamp might be the smartest play of the summer.
