The Boston Bruins are betting big on James Hagens' development—and the IIHF World Championships are the next step in that journey.

After signing his entry-level contract on April 8, 2026, the 19-year-old forward wasted no time making an impression. He made his NHL debut just four nights later, recording a secondary assist against the Columbus Blue Jackets. From there, he skated in five total games—one regular-season contest and three Stanley Cup playoff appearances—before finding himself watching from the press box as the Bruins bowed out in Games 4, 5, and 6.

Hagens spent most of his ice time on the "kids' line," playing alongside Fraser Minten and Marat Khusnutdinov. It was a baptism by fire for the young center, who Bruins head coach Marco Sturm acknowledged still has room to grow.

"With Hagens, I do like him. I want to see him at one point, probably as a center. He has potential, but he's just not there yet," Sturm said on breakup day. "It's great for him now learning the game as a winger. Moving forward, we'll see where it goes."

Once Hagens joined the Bruins, a return to the AHL's Providence Bruins was off the table. But his season didn't end on May 1. Instead, he's heading to Switzerland for the IIHF World Championships, where he'll represent Team USA's men's national team for the first time in his career.

"Ideally, I'd rather be watching him play in Springfield, to tell you the honest truth," Bruins GM Don Sweeney said. "But the rules are the rules. Getting James experience at this point—going to Providence for a stretch, playing regular-season games, then the playoffs—and now he has the benefit of playing in the Worlds. It's a longer tournament than people realize. It's going to be a great opportunity."

For a young player still finding his footing in the pro game, this international stage offers invaluable reps against top competition. Hagens himself told reporters he's eager for the challenge. And for Bruins fans, it's another reason to keep an eye on a prospect who could soon be wearing the Spoked-B with confidence.
