The Cleveland Browns are keeping busy with roster moves this week, adding another fresh face to their secondary. After claiming a defensive tackle off waivers earlier, the team has now signed undrafted free agent cornerback Michael Coats Jr. To clear a spot on the roster, they've waived veteran tight end Sal Cannella.
Coats enters the NFL at 25 years old—a bit older than the typical rookie—bringing experience from both Nevada and West Virginia. During his final season with the Mountaineers, he started every game and made an impact with two tackles for loss and seven passes defended. That kind of production could be exactly what the Browns need as they look to shore up their cornerback depth.
Depth is a real concern here. Beyond starters Denzel Ward and Tyson Campbell, the Browns lack established options at cornerback. That opens the door for Coats to compete for a spot on the final 53-man roster. He'll be battling Myles Harden, Myles Bryant, D'Angelo Ross, Dom Jones, and Tre Avery for a role in the secondary.
However, Coats doesn't directly address the team's biggest need at the position: a reliable nickel cornerback. He played exclusively on the outside at West Virginia, so his path to making the team will likely depend on his ability to adapt or prove he can excel on the boundary. For now, it's another intriguing addition to a position group that's hungry for competition.
