Green himself grew up playing basketball, but as a junior in high school, he shifted his focus to football and track. He became a standout long jumper, setting the school record with a leap of 23 feet, 5 inches—a mark that still stands. He also competed in the triple jump (44 feet, 3.5 inches) and the 400 meters (55.02 seconds), a one-lap sprint that demands immense speed endurance.
