The Cleveland Browns quarterback room just got a whole lot more interesting. Franchise legend Bernie Kosar has weighed in on the QB competition, and he's not backing the $230 million man.
Speaking on Yahoo Sports Daily, Kosar threw his support behind rookie Shedeur Sanders over Deshaun Watson, suggesting last year's struggles were more about the team around him than his own talent. "For Shedeur to come in as a rookie with a really limited talent roster around him offensively, he certainly made plays," Kosar said. "He deserves to be in this mix and I wouldn't be surprised to see Shedeur get this opportunity early, if he doesn't come out as the game 1 starter."
The numbers back up Kosar's take. Cleveland finished 2025 ranked 31st in scoring and 30th in total yards, stumbling to a 5-12 record. Sanders accounted for three of those wins during his starting stint, posting 1,400 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while adding 169 rushing yards and a score. Chris Pownall of Yardbarker attributed the rookie's modest output to that same struggling offense.
Head coach Todd Monken has made it clear: the starting job goes to whoever earns it during OTAs, minicamp, and training camp. That's an open door Sanders is already walking through with scripture-flavored social media posts that keep the buzz building.
But there's a financial elephant in the room. Watson's five-year, $230 million contract, signed in 2022, looms over every roster decision. Even with legal issues, inconsistent play, and a ruptured Achilles that wiped out his entire 2025 season, reports say he's healthy enough to compete this year. That leaves the front office weighing sunk costs against what's actually happening on the field.
Watson's Cleveland resume tells a complicated story, but Kosar's vote of confidence for Sanders signals that the QB room is anything but settled. With training camp on the horizon, this is shaping up to be one of the most compelling battles in the NFL.
