The Cleveland Browns took a slight risk at the top of the first round on Thursday night. While holding pick number six, they had the opportunity to trade back and collect two additional selections in this year's NFL Draft. They did just that by coming to a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs to acquire a third-round pick and a fifth-round pick.

With their first round swap, the Browns were still able to select their top tackle on the board, Spencer Fano. Fano comes from Utah, where he advanced his game to a point where he is one of the best tackles in all of America. He has the potential to be exactly what Cleveland needs at the tackle position, and they drafted him to be a cornerstone piece of the future.

Here are five things to know about the Browns' newest offensive lineman.

This is the player that the Cleveland Browns wanted. Cleveland was looking to draft Fano with their sixth overall pick, allegedly, regardless of who was on the board. Fano is a player that Cleveland really wanted to land, and frankly, is one of the most athletic offensive linemen in the draft this year. To get him after trading back and acquiring two additional picks is exactly what Cleveland needed to do, and they did it.

In Fano's short time with the Cleveland media, he was asked about Cleveland legend Joe Thomas. He called Thomas the best tackle of all time and said that he is going to learn as much as he possibly can from the Browns' legend. He said that it is going to be a "blessing."

Fano is not just a roadblock at tackle; he is one of the most athletic players at the position that this draft has to offer. He had a relative athletic score (RAS) of 9.80. That score factors in several factors; you can learn exactly what it is below, but the takeaway here is that Joe Thomas had a 9.37 RAS and Myles Garrett had a 9.99. That's good company to keep.

Spencer Fano has the 5th highest #RAS for a Browns 1st round pick since 2000 and their highest RAS for a tackle, over Joe Thomas in 2007 who had 9.37 and Jedrick Wills who had 8.43.Their highest 1st round RAS, of course, is Myles Garrett with 9.99. https://t.co/1hww5FmZbh

In 2025, Fano had 822 snaps, and he gave up a total of zero sacks and zero quarterback hits. He did see an uptick in quarterback pressures allowed, with five of those on the season. That's a rate of .6 percent of snaps he was giving up a quarterback pressure.

Fano was named a unanimous All-American in the 2025 season, making him just the fifth Utah Ute to earn the award and deservedly so. Fano was special in his final year at Utah and was rewarded as such.
