The Cleveland Browns' quarterback room is getting crowded—and not in a good way. After drafting Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round and Dillon Gabriel in the third round last year, the team added Taylen Green to the mix this season. With Deshaun Watson locked in and Sanders already making a Pro Bowl appearance, the writing is on the wall: someone has to go.
That someone is likely Dillon Gabriel. Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox recently named the left-handed passer as a top trade candidate, but the projected return is a tough pill to swallow. According to Knox, the Browns could expect just a 2027 seventh-round pick in exchange for the 25-year-old backup. "While teams won't be clamoring to add Gabriel as a potential starter, the 25-year-old should draw interest as a backup," Knox writes.
For a player the Browns invested a third-round pick in just one year ago, that's a steep drop. Gabriel isn't a franchise quarterback, but he offers solid depth and three more years of cheap team control. Moving him for a seventh-rounder would be a major letdown—and a glaring sign of a draft pick that didn't pan out.
General manager Andrew Berry would be wise to hold onto Gabriel or at least aim for a fifth- or sixth-round pick in any trade package. A deal that swaps Gabriel and a sixth-rounder for a fifth could be a more reasonable outcome. The Browns won't recoup the third-round pick they spent, but they can still salvage some value.
Knox also floated the Atlanta Falcons as a potential landing spot. With the right approach, Cleveland can turn a tough situation into a manageable one—without giving away a young quarterback for pennies.
