The Cleveland Browns have undergone a major offensive overhaul this offseason, completely reshaping their offensive line and bringing in a pair of rookie receivers. They might even add more depth at tight end or running back before the season kicks off. But one position group has remained largely unchanged: the quarterback room.
As it stands, the Browns' QB competition is a three-man race featuring Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson, and Dillon Gabriel. The big question, of course, is who will ultimately get the nod under center. Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport recently released his projected starting lineup for Cleveland, and his pick has raised more than a few eyebrows.
"Offense... QB: Deshaun Watson," Davenport wrote. "The quarterback situation in Cleveland will be a hot topic well into the summer, but if he's anywhere near 100 percent, Deshaun Watson is going to be the guy."
If that projection becomes reality, it would be nothing short of a disaster for the Browns' front office. While it's a very real possibility that Watson wins the starting job—the real competition appears to be between Watson and Sanders, with Gabriel as a distant third—starting Watson would be a massive mistake. The veteran quarterback simply hasn't shown enough over the past few seasons to justify being handed the reins.
But there's an even bigger reason why this decision would be considered malpractice: the Browns have zero incentive to start Watson, both in the short and long term. Watson is unlikely to perform at a high level, and even if he does, his massive contract makes him nearly impossible to justify financially. With Cleveland already looking to move on from his deal, his future with the team is bleak at best.
Meanwhile, Sanders showed flashes of promise despite some rookie struggles. For a team in need of a long-term solution, handing the job to Watson would be a step backward. The Browns have a chance to build for the future—let's hope they don't waste it on a quarterback who's already on his way out.
