When a Cleveland Browns legend speaks, the Dawg Pound listens—and recently, Bernie Kosar had some glowing words for the team's young quarterback, Shedeur Sanders.
As the Browns gear up for the 2026 NFL season, all eyes are on the quarterback battle between veteran Deshaun Watson and the 24-year-old Sanders. Watson, who missed the entire 2025 season after tearing his Achilles in 2024, is finally back in the mix. But according to Kosar, the competition might not be as one-sided as some expect.
During an appearance on Yahoo! Sports Daily, Kosar didn't hold back his praise for Sanders, who was selected in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. "For Shedeur to come in as a rookie, with a really limited talent roster around him offensively, he certainly made plays," Kosar said. "He deserves to be in the mix, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Shedeur get this opportunity early if he doesn't come out as the Game 1 starter."
Sanders entered his rookie season as the No. 4 quarterback on the depth chart, but he didn't stay there long. He made his NFL debut in Week 11 against the Baltimore Ravens after fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel suffered a concussion. Sanders went on to start the remainder of the regular season, finishing with 1,400 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, completing 56.6% of his passes. While the numbers show some growing pains, the flashes of talent were undeniable.
For Browns fans, Kosar's endorsement carries weight. The legendary quarterback knows a thing or two about leading a team in Cleveland, and his confidence in Sanders suggests the young signal-caller could be more than just a backup. As training camp approaches, the quarterback room is suddenly one of the most intriguing storylines in the NFL—and Sanders is right in the middle of it.
