Harry Brook made a triumphant return to competitive cricket, anchoring Yorkshire's reply with an unbeaten 29 after their bowlers had dismantled Warwickshire for just 147 on the opening day of their County Championship Division One clash at Edgbaston.
The England star, playing his first game of the summer, walked in with his side in trouble at 38-3 but found a steadying partner in James Wharton (40) to add 63 runs for the fourth wicket. At stumps, Yorkshire reached 110-4, trailing by just 37 runs with Brook looking in fine touch.
Earlier, Yorkshire's decision to bowl first on a pitch offering some grass cover proved inspired. The visitors' seam attack, led by Jack White's impressive 4-49, exploited the conditions superbly. George Hill chipped in with 2-27, while Ben Cliff and Logan van Beek both claimed two wickets apiece.
Warwickshire's innings never truly recovered from losing their top three inside the first nine overs. Adam Lyth, Johnny Bairstow, and Brook himself all took sharp catches as the home side's batting crumbled around Sam Hain's gritty 57 from 97 balls – the only score of substance in the innings.
The Bears' tail wagged briefly, with Ethan Bamber smashing two sixes into the Hollies Stand before falling to a brilliant swinging yorker from White. But with Olly Hannon-Dalby also showing resistance, the last-wicket partnership of 30 was actually the highest of the innings – a damning statistic for the home side.
Hannon-Dalby, recalled from a loan spell at Worcestershire due to injuries to Chris Woakes and Keith Barker, then produced a beauty of an off-cutter to remove Lyth early in Yorkshire's reply. But Brook's composed knock, coupled with Wharton's solid contribution, has put the visitors firmly in control heading into day two.
