The Denver Broncos family is mourning the loss of a true pioneer. Craig Morton, the legendary quarterback who led the team to its first-ever Super Bowl, passed away at the age of 83 on Saturday at his home in California.

Before John Elway made No. 7 iconic in Denver, Morton was the man wearing it. His journey to the Broncos was a testament to perseverance. After starting his career with the Dallas Cowboys (1965-1973) and later the New York Giants (1974-1976), Morton arrived in Denver as a veteran journeyman in 1977. That season, he did something no one had done before: he guided the Broncos to Super Bowl XII, where they fell 27-10 to his former team, the Cowboys.

Morton's 1977 campaign was nothing short of remarkable. He led Denver to a 12-2 record, throwing for 1,929 yards and 14 touchdowns—stats that ranked him 13th in yards and 9th in touchdowns that year. For his efforts, he was named the PFWA Comeback Player of the Year, a fitting honor for a player who revived his career at age 34.

Over six seasons with the Broncos, Morton cemented his legacy. His 11,895 passing yards rank third in franchise history, trailing only Peyton Manning and John Elway. His 74 touchdown passes also hold the third spot, and his 14 game-winning drives are second only to Elway himself. These numbers are a testament to his clutch performances and leadership on the field.

In recognition of his contributions, Morton was inducted into the Broncos' Ring of Fame in 1988, ensuring his place among the franchise's all-time greats. For fans who remember the pre-Elway era, Morton was the quarterback who first showed Denver what a Super Bowl run looked like—a legacy that will forever be part of Broncos history.
