The Denver Broncos have made a decision on E.J. Warner, the son of Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner, following his rookie minicamp tryout—and for now, the team is passing on signing him.
Warner, a 6-foot, 203-pound quarterback from Fresno State, was one of 33 rookies who participated in Denver's rookie minicamp over the weekend. While head coach Sean Payton praised the 22-year-old's performance on Saturday, the Broncos ultimately did not offer him a contract, according to KUSA-TV's Mike Klis.
Payton was quick to separate E.J. from his legendary father, noting that the younger Warner brings a different style to the position. "He's entirely different," Payton said. "He's just really stood out with getting in and out of the huddle. He has a quick release and a good stroke. [He's a] different type [of] player even. He's probably more celebrated coming out of Fresno [State] than his dad was coming out of Northern Iowa."
In fact, Payton drew a comparison to a familiar face from his New Orleans Saints days. "This Warner reminds me a lot of Chase Daniel," Payton said. "If you see his height, weight, size, speed, they're very similar. He's done a nice job. He's done a very nice job and especially considering he's coming off a weekend with different terminology, and he's kind of yawned at it. It's been real quick for him."
Veteran quarterback Nathan Peterman also tried out at the minicamp and was not signed. As of now, Denver has inked just two tryout players: cornerback Paul Manning and wide receiver Mike Woods. The Broncos may circle back to Warner down the road, but for the time being, they're sticking with their current quarterback room.
For fans following the quarterback carousel, this decision keeps Denver's depth chart unchanged—but it's clear E.J. Warner made an impression that could pay off later.
