The Denver Broncos have officially parted ways with diminutive running back Deuce Vaughn, cutting ties with the 5-foot-6 former Dallas Cowboys draft pick after just one season in the Mile High City.
Vaughn, who stands at 5-foot-6 and weighs 176 pounds, was originally selected by the Cowboys in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Kansas State. He spent last season on Denver's practice squad before signing a futures contract following the regular season. Now, he's been waived as the Broncos continue to shape their roster ahead of training camp.
The move comes as little surprise given Denver's increasingly crowded backfield. The Broncos have been busy this offseason, most notably adding wide receiver Jaylen Waddle via trade to bolster an offense that has struggled in recent years. But the running back room is where the real depth lies.
J.K. Dobbins re-signed with the team, RJ Harvey returns for another season, and rookie fourth-round pick Jonah Coleman is expected to make an immediate impact. That trio is likely to handle the bulk of the workload this season. Behind them, Jaleel McLaughlin, Tyler Badie, and Cody Schrager round out the depth chart.
According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, the Broncos waived Vaughn shortly after rookie minicamp—a telling sign that Denver is confident in its current running back options, both starters and reserves.
For Vaughn, the release marks another chapter in a career that began with a memorable moment. Three years ago, his father—a Cowboys scout—had the emotional privilege of calling his son to deliver the news that Dallas had drafted him. That viral video captured a special father-son NFL moment. But in the tough business of professional football, Vaughn now finds himself looking for a new opportunity.
As the Broncos gear up for the season, their running back room looks deeper and more dynamic than it has in years—a promising sign for an offense that's finally starting to take shape.
