The NFL is placing a big bet on its Monday Night Football Week 1 opener—and it all comes down to the health of two star quarterbacks. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the first primetime matchup of the season will feature the Denver Broncos taking on the Kansas City Chiefs, though the exact venue is still to be determined as the league finalizes its schedule ahead of Thursday’s release.
But here’s the twist: it’s still unclear whether Patrick Mahomes (torn ACL and LCL) and Bo Nix (fractured ankle) will be ready to suit up. If neither can go, the NFL could be looking at a Justin Fields vs. Jarrett Stidham showdown under the bright lights—with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman calling the action. That’s not exactly the blockbuster start the league had in mind for its flagship Monday night slot.
Joe Buck, who announced the matchup on Good Morning America, remains optimistic. “Yeah, I mean, well, first of all, we know that Patrick Mahomes is not human,” Buck joked. “He probably healed after a week. But he’s evidently ahead of schedule. Bo Nix missed the AFC Championship Game with a bad ankle, but he is supposedly good to go and ready for training camp. So, hopeful that within that matchup we get Mahomes and Nix, which makes it that much better.”
Mahomes suffered his knee injury on December 14, 2025, and has been rehabbing aggressively ever since. Fox’s Jay Glazer reported in March that Mahomes would be back “by far” before Week 1, and ESPN added last month that he’s on track to participate in the Chiefs’ first OTAs. Still, Chiefs owner Clark Hunt told Front Office Sports in March that he didn’t expect Kansas City to open in Seattle precisely because of Mahomes’ recovery. “From a league standpoint, I think there would be some concern whether our quarterback will be ready to go,” Hunt said. “My guess is the league won’t want to take that risk.”
Yet the league took that risk anyway. Whether we get a superstar duel or a backup battle, one thing is certain: all eyes will be on Kansas City and Denver when the lights come on for Week 1.
