In a significant blow to the British contingent, distance runner Emile Cairess has been forced to withdraw from this month's London Marathon due to a calf injury. The 28-year-old, who finished third in London in 2024 and fourth in the Paris Olympic marathon that same year, was widely tipped as a contender to challenge Sir Mo Farah's longstanding British record of 2:05:11.

This marks the second consecutive year Cairess will miss the iconic event, following an ankle tendon injury that sidelined him for the 2025 race. In a statement, Cairess expressed his disappointment, emphasizing his respect for the marathon distance. "I only want to be on the start line if I’m in the best possible condition," he said, explaining that the calf issue sustained earlier in his training block had prevented him from reaching peak fitness.

Cairess's withdrawal adds to a string of high-profile absences for the April 26th race. The field was already diminished by the exit of Kenyan star Peres Jepchirchir, the reigning Olympic and world champion, who pulled out Tuesday with a stress fracture. Reigning Olympic champion Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands had previously withdrawn last month due to an Achilles problem.

For fans and athletes alike, these injuries underscore the immense physical demands of marathon training and the fine line elite runners walk in their pursuit of peak performance. Cairess concluded his statement by wishing luck to all participants and affirming his goal to return to the London Marathon in 2027.
