In a significant blow to their season, Bristol Bears have been dealt another tough injury hand as first-choice hooker Gabriel Oghre is ruled out for the remainder of the campaign. The 27-year-old, who has earned one cap for England, requires surgery after sustaining a knee injury during Bristol's victory over Newcastle last month.
Oghre has been a standout performer for the Bears this season, making 19 starts across all competitions and crossing the try line an impressive 14 times. His absence leaves a substantial gap in the squad, particularly during the crucial business end of the season.
To fill the void, Bristol have moved quickly to bring in familiar face Fred Davies on a temporary loan deal from Doncaster Knights. Davies is no stranger to the Bears' setup, having made 14 appearances for the club during a two-year stint between 2022 and 2024. His return provides experienced cover and ensures continuity in the hooker position.
Bristol director of rugby Pat Lam acknowledged the severity of the setback but struck an optimistic tone. "Losing Gabe for the rest of the season is another huge blow during a season of significant injury setbacks across our squad," Lam told the club website. "But as we've said throughout, it's now an opportunity for the next guy to step up and make their mark during the business end of the season."
Lam also expressed confidence in Davies's ability to hit the ground running. "Fred is a player who knows our game and our environment and will be able to slot seamlessly back into the squad. We're grateful to Ian McGeechan and Doncaster for facilitating the move."
With Davies rejoining the squad for the run-in, Bristol will hope to maintain their momentum and turn this adversity into an opportunity for squad depth to shine.
