In what was perhaps a bit of a backhanded compliment, Brian Kelly explained why his successor could win a championship with the Tigers.

In a move that feels more like a subtle jab than a genuine vote of confidence, former LSU head coach Brian Kelly has predicted that his successor, Lane Kiffin, will lead the Tigers to a national championship. And while the statement sounds supportive on the surface, the context reveals a layer of complexity worth unpacking.

Kelly, who was fired by LSU midway through the 2025 season despite posting a stellar 34-14 record over four years, recently sat down with USA TODAY Sports' John Brice and Blake Toppmeyer. When asked if Kiffin could win it all in Baton Rouge, Kelly didn't exactly offer a ringing endorsement—but he didn't dismiss the idea either.

"I think so," Kelly said. "That wasn't yes. Here's why I would say yes. I think that they have invested in NIL for him. They have given him the opportunity. There's a lot of good things moving in that direction. The recruiting classes are really in solid shape. And I think Lane's a really smart football coach, so I think it's in a really good place, and I believe because there's an investment in that NIL, he's going to be able to be Lane Kiffin. And that's important."

That last bit—"he's going to be able to be Lane Kiffin"—is where things get interesting. Kelly went on to explain that Kiffin's approach to roster building, which relies heavily on the transfer portal rather than developing 18-year-old recruits over multiple seasons, is a clear departure from his own philosophy. And in Kelly's view, that's exactly what LSU wanted.

"He's not going to take the 18-year-old kid and develop them all the way through the ranks. And that's fine, because that's what they wanted," Kelly added. "I think with those things in place, he can win the national championship."

The underlying message? Kelly seems to suggest that LSU's significant investment in NIL resources—resources he may not have had at his disposal—will give Kiffin the tools to succeed in a way that Kelly himself was never fully empowered to. It's a backhanded compliment wrapped in a prediction, and it speaks volumes about the lingering tension between the former coach and the program that let him go.

For fans and analysts alike, this adds an intriguing layer to the upcoming season. Kiffin inherits a program with top-tier recruiting classes and newfound financial backing, but the pressure to deliver a title is now higher than ever. Whether he can channel those resources into a championship run remains to be seen—but if Kelly's prediction holds true, LSU's gamble on a new direction might just pay off.
