LSU football fired Brian Kelly for not winning it all. Now he explains why his replacement Lane Kiffin might.

When LSU fired Brian Kelly, the message was clear: win a national championship, or else. It's a standard his three predecessors all met—Nick Saban in 2003, Les Miles in 2007, and Ed Orgeron in 2019. So now, with Lane Kiffin taking over in Baton Rouge, the big question is whether he can do what Kelly couldn't.

In an exclusive interview on USA TODAY Sports' "Sports Seriously: College Football Show," Kelly was asked point-blank: Will Lane Kiffin win a title at LSU? His answer was measured but optimistic.

"I think so," Kelly said. "Here's why I would say yes—they've invested in NIL for him. They've given him the opportunity. There are a lot of good things moving in that direction. The recruiting classes are in really solid shape. And I think Lane's a really smart football coach. I believe because there's an investment in that NIL, he's going to be able to be Lane Kiffin. And that's important."

Kelly elaborated on what makes Kiffin's approach different from his own. "You know, he's not going to take the 18-year-old kid and develop him all the way through the ranks. And that's fine. Because that's what they wanted. I think with those things in place, he can win the national championship."

For fans and analysts watching this transition, it's a fascinating shift in philosophy. LSU's history is built on developing homegrown talent, but the modern college football landscape—fueled by the transfer portal and NIL deals—demands a different playbook. Kiffin, known for his quick rebuilds at Ole Miss and his offensive ingenuity, seems tailor-made for this era.

When asked earlier if he had any advice for his successor, Kelly kept it simple. "Lane doesn't need advice. He's seen it from the NFL to SC to building a program. The world we live in today—Michigan just won a basketball championship with five transfers. You can do it, but there are so many moving pieces. I don't think he needs any advice."

Whether Kiffin can deliver LSU its fourth national title in two decades remains to be seen. But with a powerhouse program, top-tier recruiting, and a coach who thrives in the chaos of modern college football, the pieces are certainly in place. For now, the Bayou is watching—and waiting.
