The Green Bay Packers are far from done building their roster. Just days after adding six draft picks and 10 undrafted free agents, the front office struck again on Tuesday, claiming cornerback MJ Devonshire and tight end Luke Lachey off waivers. These moves signal that general manager Brian Gutekunst is still hunting for answers at two critical positions.

"I don't know if I ever feel like I've checked every box because I don't know if anything's ever complete," Gutekunst said after the draft. "That doesn't mean I don't feel really good about what our team looks like. This is 365. We'll take a look at it and see what's next." His words unintentionally revealed what the Packers truly need: depth and competition in the secondary and at tight end.

Devonshire, a former seventh-round pick by the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023, has yet to see regular-season action. He spent his rookie year on the Raiders' practice squad and later bounced through stints with the Carolina Panthers, Baltimore Ravens, and Buffalo Bills. But don't let the journeyman label fool you—this 5-foot-11, 190-pound cornerback has flashed potential in preseason action. During five exhibition games with the Ravens in 2024, he allowed zero completions on a single target across 30 defensive snaps, earning an impressive 82.0 PFF coverage grade. The Packers jumped quickly after Buffalo waived him Monday.

The tight end addition fills a more obvious hole. Gutekunst openly admitted after the draft that the team wanted an in-line tight end, and Lachey fits that mold. The Iowa product brings the kind of blocking prowess and physicality that Green Bay's offense has been missing. With the roster now at 90 players, these two young additions aren't just camp bodies—they're the kind of low-risk, high-upside moves that keep a championship window open.
