The New York Giants may have found a gem in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft. By selecting former Notre Dame wide receiver Malachi Fields, they've added a dynamic playmaker to their receiving corps—and one NFL analyst believes the rookie could be something special.

Fields brings an impressive blend of size and speed to the Giants' offense. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 223 pounds, he's built like a true X receiver—the type of player who can line up on the boundary, win contested catches, and move the chains. With veteran Darius Slayton recovering from core-muscle surgery, Fields could quickly compete for the No. 2 receiver role during training camp this summer.

NFL analyst Brian Baldinger, a former offensive lineman, recently broke down Fields' college highlights on the Giants' YouTube channel. What stood out most? Not just the catches, but the complete game.

"He's a true X receiver," Baldinger said. "Also, because of his size, he could be an excellent blocker. Obviously, Jeremiyah Love—the third pick in the draft by the Arizona Cardinals—many of his big runs were because Fields saw what was happening and was able to eliminate one of the players. Excellent blocker when given the opportunity. The Giants got themselves a true X receiver in the third round."

Fields' ability to contribute as a blocker is a trait that often goes unnoticed but can make a huge difference in the running game. For a Giants team looking to establish offensive balance, having a receiver who can also pave the way for runs is a valuable asset.

Fields could begin turning heads as early as this weekend's rookie minicamp. A standout across five college seasons at Virginia and Notre Dame, he has the potential to make a major impact on New York's offense from Week 1. If his transition to the NFL is as smooth as Baldinger predicts, Giants fans might be celebrating this third-round steal for years to come.
