The Milwaukee Brewers have suffered a significant blow to their bullpen, as left-handed reliever Ángel Zerpa is set to undergo reconstructive surgery on the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow next week. The team confirmed on May 5 that he will miss the remainder of the 2026 regular season and postseason, with an estimated return timeline of spring or summer 2027.

Acquired from the Kansas City Royals during the offseason in exchange for outfielder Isaac Collins and reliever Nick Mears, Zerpa was envisioned as a key late-inning arm for the Brewers. After a dominant showing in the World Baseball Classic—where he made six appearances for Venezuela and emerged as an electric high-leverage option—expectations were high. However, in 12 appearances with Milwaukee, he never seemed to find his rhythm. The 26-year-old posted a 6.39 ERA across 12⅔ innings, striking out just eight batters while walking six and surrendering two home runs.

This injury is a tough setback for a player who was seen as a cornerstone of the Brewers' bullpen plans. Zerpa is under team control through 2028 and is currently earning $1.1 million through arbitration this season. He would likely receive a modest raise next year if the Brewers choose to keep him on the roster.

For now, Milwaukee will have to adjust its bullpen strategy without one of its most promising arms, while Zerpa begins the long road to recovery.
